“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” — Winston Churchill

I am completing this work term as a digital marketing intern for Tea With Tracie, which is allowing me to put the knowledge I learned in my courses into action in the workplace.

Working with Tracie has introduced me to the food and beverage industry - an industry that I wasn’t very familiar with, until starting my internship. As I continue learning more about this industry and the organizational structures within, I have prepared a few questions that I would ask a senior leader in an information interview.

1. Do you think the COVID-19 pandemic positively impacted e-commerce in the food and beverage industry?

This is an important question regarding the food and beverage industry, as we experience a growth in e-commerce sales worldwide. The Covid-19 pandemic motivated consumers to purchase more food and beverage products than ever before. Many businesses switched to e-commerce to abide by government protocols, which started the increase in consumer demand for online food and beverage purchases. This question is future-oriented as it considers the impact of the global pandemic on the future of the industry. This question will help me better understand the current trends within the food and beverage industry, and how to proceed with marketing/advertising strategies.

2. Do you think expanding your product line will increase the size of your target audience?

This is an important question regarding Tea With Tracie’s business, as she considers adding new products into the store. Currently, Tracie only offers her teas in bags however, she is thinking about adding loose-leaf tea since it is gaining popularity among tea drinkers. Adding these products may attract new customers to the store, however, Tracie’s existing loyal customers may not be as inclined to try them, because they already know what they like. This question is future-oriented, as it considers the success of new products based on current/potential customer purchase behavior.

3. Do you think hiring more employees will increase productivity/efficiency? If so, what tasks/responsibilities would they have?

This is an important question in regards to the employee structure of the business and how it functions. Normally Tracie is the only employee in the business, making her responsible for all business-related tasks. Tracie seems to have everything under control by herself, however the business may run more efficiently with more employees taking on various responsibilities. This is future-oriented as it explores how the business can increase productivity.

As I continue my internship with Tracie, I will continue to learn about the industry, and prepare more questions to be discussed with a senior leader in an information interview.
